Richard left Liverpool on 17 April 1854 on board the ship Norwood, aged 25. He arrived in Melbourne on 25 July 1854.

On Feb. 5, 1869, he was prospecting for gold with fellow, John Deason, at Moliagul, Victoria, about 9 miles (14.6 Km) north-west of Dunolly when they found the biggest alluvial gold nugget in the world, now known as the Welcome Stranger.
