Benjamin Griffin was a resident of Red River county for 50 years and pioneer farmer of the Rugby community. He was born near Hickory, Miss., Oct. 19, 1865. As a youth he joined the post-Civil War migration west, settling in Texas. He worked at various farming jobs, then became a farmer and land owner in Red River county, where he lived the remainder of his life, He married Mamie Price, who died Jan. 12, 1916. To this union 13 children were born. They were J. B. Griffin and Harold Griffin, Deport; Buster Griffin and Paul Griffin, Rugby, Mrs. Jeff Hancock, Mrs. R. O. Storey, Mrs. Jim Fortner and Mrs. Mary Ann Smiley, Bogata; Mrs. Frank Moore of Rugby, Mrs. Boyd Reece of Deport and Mrs. Earl Wood of San Angelo. Following Mrs. Mamie Griffin's death, he was later married to Mrs. Mollie Rollins, and had daughter Ruth Griffin, and a step-son, Jack Rollins. Always characterized by a progressive spirit, Mr. Griffin was noted for his part in civic and fraternal-order work, and as a farmer spent his years trying to lead a simple, productive life. He had lived on the same farm more than 25 years.
