Paul LaVerne Book, 83, of the Boyers/West Sunbury area went home to be with the Lord at noon Friday at Saint Elizabeth's Hospital in Youngstown, Ohio, following a fall and an unsuccessful recovery over the past 17 days.
He was born on Oct. 20, 1930, in Worth Township, Butler County, and attended Slippery Rock High School. Paul worked on the family farm and started driving the milk truck at an early age. He married Dorothy Carrara, with whom he had three children.
Paul served for years as vice president of the McGowan Lumber Co. in Slippery Rock. In more recent years, he worked as an independent contractor.
Paul was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He was a man of few words with an excellent spirit. He was loved by all and will be dearly missed.
Paul is survived by his wife, Ada Lorraine Smith Book; three children, Paula Verne Book (Terry) Good of Portersville, Martin J. (Ruth) Book of Springfield, Ohio, and Mitchell F. (Brenda) Book of Winona Lake, Ind.; three stepsons, R. Stanley Smith and his wife, Carolyn, of Polk, Kenneth L. Smith and his wife, Penny, of Cranberry Township and Boyd D. Smith and his wife, Cindy, of Harrisville; his grandchildren, Kerry (Nathan) Miller of Portersville, Ryan (Adria) Good of Slippery Rock, Timothy Good of Portersville, Heather Book of Springfield, Ohio, Holly (Shelby) Mershon of South Charleston, Ohio, and Mikayla Book of North Carolina; and his great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Matthew, Daniel and Jesse Miller, Tyler, Luke, Hannah, and Jacob Good, Alexis and Alyssa Good, and Haley Lewis, Giovani and Aubriana Mershon.
Also he had 12 step-grandchildren; 10 step-great grandchildren, and one sister, Grace Sharrar and her husband, Fred, of Evans City.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Floyd W. and Alice (Myers) Book of Worth Township; his brothers, C. Robert Book of Harlansburg, Harold "Hap" Book of Harlansburg and William Book of Ft. Myers, Fla.; one sister, June Wimer of Portersville; his first wife, Dorothy Carrara Book of Slippery Rock; and one step-grandson, Daniel Smith.
Paul was a member and elder at the West Unity Community Church in Harrisville. He was very active in all church activities and services and served the Lord faithfully there for over 25 years.
BOOK - Friends and family of Paul LaVerne Book, who died Friday, Jan. 3, 2014, will be received at the Jamison Funeral Home in Harrisville from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the West Unity Community Church, 400 Unity Road, Harrisville, with the Rev. Boyd Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Green Lawn Cemetery in Mt. Chestnut.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to the West Unity Community Church.
