Clara Elizabeth Azeltine was born January 22, 1908, the daughter of Will and Ella Hatheway Azeltine at Rowan. She attended school at Rowan and graduated with the class of 1925. She then went on to attend Ellsworth College in Iowa Falls. She taught rural school in Wright County and second grade at Ayrshire.

She was united in marriage to John Hardcastle of Iowa Falls on June 15, 1926, at her parent's home. They lived in Ayrshire for 11 years. He served schools in Iowa as a teacher and administrator. They also lived in Cushing, Alta Vista, Hanlontown, Bode, and Sergeant Bluff.

The couple moved to Eagle Grove in 1948, and operated the Commercial Grocery on Highway 17 South for 18 years. Mr. Hardcastle died in 1966.

Mrs. Hardcastle moved to Coralville, and worked many years in the offices of the Younkers Department Store in Iowa City. She was also employed by Johnson County Health Department to work as a reservationist for the Iowa City Senior Citizens and she was secretary for the United Methodist Church in Coralville for a number of years.

Clara moved to the Dows Care Center, Dows, July 1, 1987. She died there Wednesday morning, May 25, 1988, at the age of 80 years, four months, and three days.

She is survived by her son, Jack Hardcastle, Fort Dodge; one daughter, Barbara Abbott, Eagle Grove; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and a sister, Amy Norton, Coralville.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother, Wesley, and three sisters, Ethel Azeltine, who died in infancy, May Myers, and Lillian Stuck.

She was a former member of the Eagle Grove Chapter of the O.E.S. (Order of the Eastern Star), B.P.W. (Business and Professional Women), and the United Methodist Church.,

Funeral services were held May 28, 1988 at 1:30 p.m. in the United Methodist Church, Eagle Grove. The Rev. Scott C. Hall officiated and burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove. Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
