George Lawrence Hurt, 77, of Christiansburg, died Sunday, July 30, 1995, in the VA Hospital in Salem, after a long illness. Mr. Hurt was born September 28, 1917 in Sanger, W.Va.. He was the son of the late Calvin and Sarah Hair Hurt.


Mr. Hurt was a Baptist. He was a retired school administrator in the Virginia public school system, a member of LaFayette Lodge #57 AF & AM, 32nd Degree Mason, a World War II and Korean Conflict Air Force veteran. He received his B.S. degree from King College and his Masters Degree from Radford University.


Mr. Hurt was preceded in death by three brothers, Dallas K., Robert G., and Quintan Hurt; and one sister, Jessie Woods.


Survivors include his former wife, Mary L. Hurt of Vinton; three sons, Charles Robert Hurt, Roanoke, Dallas Jackson Hurt, Sequein, Texas, and James Lawrence Hurt of Bristol, Tenn; three daughters, Debra Hurt Mers of Keystone Heights, Fla., Nancy Hurt Copper of Buchanan, Kim Hurt Adams of Goodview, and Judith Hurt of Clayton, Ga.; one brother, Rufus Hurt of Bent Mountain; one sister, Ruth Hanes of Christiansburg; twenty grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.


Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 1, at the Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Chapel in Fayetteville, W.,Va. Officiating clergy will be the Rev. Jeff Copper of Buchanan. Burial will follow in the Hurt Family Cemetery, Sanger, W.Va. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until service time today at the funeral home.
