Son of Moses Martin and Delilah Bennett Martin. Grandson of Absalom Martin and Jane J? of SC/Hall Co, GA and Joel Bennett and Elizabeth Norman Bennett of SC/Hall Co, GA. He fathered 17 children with two wives, both named Nancy. First wife is believed to be Nancy Guthrey/Guthrie but I cannot locate records.
The photo shows Ab and Nancy (Wallis) Martin.
Absalom fought in the Civil War. His best friend was shot and killed by a rifle ball right before his eyes while they were fighting side by side. He was able to visit the Cyclorama at Grant Park in Atlanta before he died, and pronouned it "realistic." He was in Virginia fighting when his wife died in childbirth, giving birth to their first son, who was stillborn. His three unmarried sisters, Hannah, Delaney and Araney (the twins) cared for the children until he returned from the war. He was now a widower with five little daughters (the youngest was small enough "to walk under the eating table"). He married Nancy A. Wallis on 24June 1866. He lived in the Coal Mountain area all of his life, in a house on Church Road. The house stood until about 2000, then was torn down. He once owned and then donated the land that Settendown Church is now on.
His seventeen children:
Children with first wife, born from approximately 1850 to 1862: Malissa, Rachel, Mary, Martha, Lucinda, stillborn boy.
Children with second wife, born from approximately 1867 to 1887: William Jeff, John Bartow Sr, Jessie Thomas, Julia D (Juley), Jeeper Manson, Alice, James F, Jeannette (Nettie), Thomas Henry, Lilley, Effie Esterlee.
