Mr. Bluford Wilmer "Doc" Uppinghouse, 84, of Payson, Illinois, died at 9:10 pm Sunday (December 29, 2013) at Sunset Home.
Born January 11, 1929 in Payson, Doc was the son of Merle and Lily Seiz Uppinghouse. He married Nadine Huddleston on July 22, 1950 in Palmyra, Missouri. She survives.
Doc was born and raised in Payson and was a lifetime member of the Payson United Methodist Church. He will be remembered for his hard work and willingness to help anyone in any way that he could. He received awards in 1994, 1996 and 1998 in recognition of his outstanding service to the community. Doc and Nadine were named Old Settler's Parade Marshals in 2000.
Doc wore many hats throughout his lifetime, as working and keeping busy is what truly made him happy. He started his working career at a very young age when he and his brother began mowing along the highway from Payson to Quincy, using a team of horses. Shortly after, he began working for his parents on their farm and then started working as a mechanic in Quincy. He later owned and operated a mobile milling service "Uppinghouse Milling" for 15 years. In 1971, Doc started his career as Payson Township Highway Commissioner. He retired after 33 years in 2004. For over 20 years, Doc worked for the Payson School District as a bus driver and served as their groundskeeper until August 2013.
Although Doc's first love was being at work, another very important part of his life was spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He also enjoyed watching the old Western "Cowboy" movies and was a fan of Nascar. Doc even owned a racecar in the 1950's and 1960's.
Survivors include his wife, Nadine; four children, Brenda Reinebach (Bruce), Bob Uppinghouse (Gemma), Greg Uppinghouse and Gaybri Maddox (Scott); four grandchildren, Brent Reinebach (Kayla), Brock Reinebach (Britney), Bobby Uppinghouse and Natasha Maddox; four great grandchildren, Hayden Williams, Bretten Uppinghouse, Madison Uppinghouse and Liam Maddox; a step granddaughter, Shannon Frese; three step great grandchildren, Devin Hobbs, Ashley Frese and Ava Frese; a sister, Alice Allensworth of Quincy; two sisters in law, Pauline Uppinghouse and Billie Mae Uppinghouse; a brother in law, Leo Shanks; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Mr. Uppinghouse was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Nathan Maddox; four brothers, Delbert "Red" Uppinghouse, Roy Uppinghouse, Donnie Uppinghouse and Lester Uppinghouse; three sisters, Dorothy "Peck" Baugher, Freida Campbell and Shelby Shanks; a sister in law, June Uppinghouse; and three brothers in law, Norman Baugher, Kenny Campbell and Arlie Allensworth.
Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 10:30 in the Payson United Methodist Church by Pastor Kate Herring. Burial will be in the Payson New Cemetery.
Visitation will be Thursday evening from 4:00 to 7:00 at the Payson United Methodist Church and Friday morning from 10:00 until the time of services at the church.
