His parents were Augustus W. VANDIVER (1826-1863) and Mary E. PAGETT (1831-1890).

On 17 Jan 1888, James was married in Anderson, South Carolina to Marie Louise "Lulah" Vandiver.

James was a banker and businessman. Sometime prior to 1930, the family (including James, Lulah, and their grown son, Basil) moved to NYC. There is a record in the NYC death index of James' death at age 76 in Queens, Queens County, NY on 25 Mar 1936, Death Certificate 2429.

One of James VANDIVER's paternal great grandfathers was the Revolutionary War Patriot from South Carolina, Edward VANDIVER (1748-1837).

Edward VANDIVER donated the land for the Neal's Creek Baptist Church and Cemetery where his grave and many of his descendants' graves are located.
