Howard L Hesseltine, 83, of Clements, died Monday in a Lodi convalescent hospital. Born in Springdale, Wash., he lived a number of years in Lodi, where he owned and operated a Texaco Petroleum distributorship. He moved to Clements 48 years ago where he raised cattle and also had vineyards. He graduated from Lodi High School in 1927. He had played on the champion 1926 Lodi High School football team and is listed in the Lodi Sports Hall of Fame. He enjoyed boxing and once sparred with former heavyweight champion Max Baer. He became a pilot in earlier years and taught local crop-dusters to fly using a Steerman aircraft. He also owned a P-40 aircraft. He was a member of Grace Church of Lockeford, Free and Accepted Order of the Masons, Woodbridge Lodge No. 131, Stockton Scottish Rite Bodies, Ben Ali Temple in Sacramento, and of the Tokay Shrine Club. He was a past member of Clements Buckaroos. Survivors include his wife, Leah Hesseltine of Clements; two sons, Robert L. Hesseltine of Clements and David W. Hesseltine of Wallace; a daughter, Sharon Steed of Ione; three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. today in the Gierhart Wells & Donahue Funeral Home, 123 N. School St., Lodi. Burial will be at Glenview Cemetery, Clements. Memorials may be made to the Grace Church of Lockeford Building Fund, 13301 Dawson Road, Lockeford, CA 95237, or to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, 1701 19th Ave., San Francisco, CA 94122.
