Barbara Dunlap, GOP Leader, Critically Burned
A prominent local Republican leader, Barbara Dunlap, 52, was critically burned yesterday afternoon in her home at 1460 W. Alpine.
Mrs. Dunlap is reported in critical condition in the burn unit at Dameron Hospital.
Stockton firemen believe she was burned when fumes from gasoline she may have been using to clean some clothing exploded. Mrs. Dunlap ran outside the house engulfed in flames. A passing California Water Service employe, Joe Valles, 34, of 221 W. Ninth smothered the flames.
Valles received burns on his hands and arm but was back at work today. He left the scene without leaving his name but the Record learned he was responsible for smothering the flames. Firemen, who had been unable to talk to Mrs. Dunlap, believe she had poured about a half gallon of gasoline into a bathtub.
About an hour before the 2:40 p.m. explosion, a woman answering her description had purchased a five-gallon can of fuel at a nearby station. Clothing was stacked in a bedroom and firemen theorize she may have been preparing to clean it. The gasoline fumes were ignited by a floor heater outside the bathroom, firemen believe. Firemen said Mrs. Dunlap could not have been in the bathroom at the time of the explosion but probably was nearby. She also may have spilled some gasoline on her clothing, firemen believe, because she was totally engulfed in flames. The force of the explosion bowed out the bathroom wall and blew out windows in the house. Damage was estimated at $4,000 to the house and $500 to its contents.
Mrs. Dunlap is the wife of Carter "Pat" Dunlap, president of Dunlap Elections, a California and Nevada wholesale electronics firm.
Mrs. Dunlap has made numerous appearances before local groups in crusading against communism. She also has held state-wide posts in the Republican Party.
