Leona Elizabeth (Proehl) Nelson was born on March 4, 1915, in Madison, South Dakota, to Otto and Gertrude (Arvidson) Proehl. She was baptized at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Madison, South Dakota, on April 11, 1915. The family moved to farms in the Kerkhoven area where she attended country school. On November 28, 1933, she was united in marriage to Abner Nelson in Willmar, Minnesota. They lived on a farm in rural Montevideo before moving into town, where she lived until moving to the Clarkfield Care Center in 2008. She was the bookkeeper for Abner Nelson Construction. She was confirmed on May 9, 1948, and was a long-time and faithful member of at Our Saviors Lutheran Church. She was a charter member of the Altar Guild. She enjoyed cooking, baking, making Norwegian foods and egg coffee, playing cards and entertaining. Her faith and her family were extremely important to her. She is survived by four grandchildren: Lori, Lynn, Sheryl and Scott; five great grandchildren: Chelsea, Arielle, John, Daniel and David; and a sister, Agnes.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Abner Nelson on April 4,1985; two daughters: Wanda Flickinger on June 17, 2010, and LaVon Larson on October 4, 2011; a son-in-law, Kenneth Larson; a sister, Lucille Charlet; and a brother, Lester Anderson.
