THOMASVILLE Mr. William (Bill) Beck, Jr. passed away quietly at his home on Monday, December 30, 2013 surrounded by family and friends.

He was born on September 1, 1923 in Thomasville, NC where he has lived all his life except for military service during World War II.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Martha R. Beck of the home and four children; daughter, Brenda Wood and husband Roger of Clemmons; son Jerry and wife Barbara of Lexington; daughter Reba Brewer and husband Bill of Lenoir; and son D. Keith and wife Tammy of Lexington; nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, William Odell Beck; his mother, Mary Cloniger Beck; sister, Lucille Beck Cross; and three brothers, Charles (Cobby), Larry, and Colon (Mack) Beck.

He was proud of his service during World War II in the Solomon Islands of the Pacific where he made the rank of Chief Torpedoman before he was twenty-one. He retired from the Naval Reserves after 26 years of service. Friends and family have referred to him affectionately as "Chief" ever since and he loved it. Love and respect for his country was instilled in his family by him always through words and actions. His favorite hobby was keeping in touch with friends on his ham radio. He was a faithful member of Bethel United Methodist Church for over 60 years and served on the Official Board, as Sunday School Superintendent, and teacher to the men's Sunday school class. In his younger days he was also a scout master at Bethel and Wesleyan Methodist Churches which led to his love of camping which he shared with his family for many years. Being a member of the Thomasville Masonic Lodge and the lodge in Denton, NC was of great importance to him and from which life-long friendships were formed. In addition to the Masons, he was also a member of the Thomasville Jaycees, a T-ville camping club, and a toastmaster club. He was employed at Bryant Electric Company in High Point for 20 years and retired from Thomasville Furniture after 21 years. He and Martha enjoyed camping trips to Florida and Charleston, SC as well as the mountains of North Carolina well into retirement.

Funeral services will be held at the J.C. Green and Sons Funeral Home Chapel in Thomasville, NC on Thursday, January 2, 2014 at 2:00 PM. Burial will follow in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery.
