Man Dies as Saloon Burns
George Spaughton's saloon, located on the corner of Main Street and Wells Street, caught fire early one morning near the end of December. The place could not be saved by the fire department because "it burned like a tinder box." Thomas Dutton and a man named McCoy, from Ellis Junction {Crivitz} were both asleep in the back part of the building when the fire started. Dutton, known as "Uncle Tommy," was between 80 and 90 years of age and partially blind and deaf, but he was said to be hearty and vigorous. He had many friends in Marinette and a large number of people took part in his funeral procession. Dutton was survived by his wife and six children, who lived on a farm a few miles upriver. The saloon that had burned called "X-10-U-8" was owned by Joseph Bernard of Buckingham, Canada.
