Fred Adlard

Mr. Adlard was one of 12 children and the third son of Mrs. Catherine Adlard, 80, of Condon, and who is one of the county's highly respected pioneer mothers. He was born near Corvallis February 9, 1887. At the age of one year he came to Gilliam County with his parents and made this his home continuously until two years ago when he moved to Eugene, where it is said, he thought his wife's health would improve.

He was reared on a farm in Ajax then when old enough to start farming for himself, he did so. On December 14, 1910, he was united in marriage to Miss Mabel Price. To this union on son, Arlo, was born.

Life in the valley did not agree with Mr. Adlard, it is said, and his physical condition failed materially during the two-year period. Early in 1938 he had an illness that confined him to the bed for several weeks.

On the day of his death he left home some time about noon apparently in search of a job. He went into the hills a few miles from Eugene and inserted the knife near his heart. His body was found by a searching party the following day.

Funeral services were held at Poole's chapel in Eugene Saturday with the Elks Lodge, of which he was a member, in charge. Burial was in Salem that afternoon.

Surviving are his widow and son; his mother, Mrs. Catherine Adlard; three sisters, Estella Myers and Alice Whyte of Condon, and Edith Weimer of Snohomish, Washington; three brothers, Will of Condon, Charlie of Moro and Walter of Salem.

Among relatives attending the services were Mrs. Adlard, Mr. and Mrs. George Whyte, and Will Adlard of Condon; Charlie Adlard of Moro; Walter Adlard, his son and daughter, and Vera Whyte of Salem; Mrs. Pearl Hout and Mrs. Price of Corvallis; Mr. and Mrs. Glen Price of Silverton; and Mr. and Mrs. Ray Rogers and family of Portland.
