William N. Alvord, Sr., 97, a long time Skagit Valley resident, passed away in a local care center on Wednesday, September 12, 2001. Graveside funeral services were held in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery on Saturday, September 15, 2001.

He was born in Portland, Oregon on March 22, 1904, the son of Carl A. and Rhoda Dix Alvord. They moved to Whatcom County in 1912. He attended schools there and graduated from Nooksack High School. He married Florence U. Otis in Burlington on November 12, 1932 and settled in La Conner where he worked in commercial fishing. He also operated the Fish Co-op and the Planter Hotel, was the police chief, drove the school bus, and was custodian for the school.

Survivors include his daughters Mary Ellen (Walter) Dellinger of Quincy, Shirley Helsel of La Conner, and Carol (Jerry) Levy of Everett; two sons, David (Joan) Alvord and Richard (Trudy) Alvord, all of Mount Vernon; brother, Ben (Iola) Alvord of Auburn, California; sixteen grandchildren, and numerous great grandchildren.

His wife, Florence, his parents, and three sons, William, Jr., Larry, Sr., and Allen preceded him in death.
