Nellie was the daughter of John Calvin Heath, a Civil War Veteran who fought with Co I of the 27th Indiana Infantry Regiment, and Hester Jane Phillips. I found her family on the 1880 Census, living in Wayne, Montgomery, Indiana, where John C. was earning a living as a carpenter. Hester would have managed to stay busy caring for their home, four children, and two lodgers. The couple had welcomed son William S. in 1873, daughter Eliza E. in 1874, son Nelson A in 1876, and son Jessie G. in 1879. Their two lodgers were 32-year-old Ambrose Pierce, and 22-year-old Michael Kline.

Nellie was born in late fall on 24 Nov 1890. When she was a mere three years old, her father John died the week before Christmas on 19 Dec 1893. Her mother Hester filed for a widow's pension on 14 Jan 1894.

When the 1900 Census was enumerated, the family was living in Gas City, Grant, Indiana. Nellie's mother Hester, widowed, aged 46, with six children to care for with just a widow's pension, did what many women in her situation did, she took in a couple of lodgers to help make ends meet--Thomas McCarty, age 48, and Joseph McCarty, aged 44.

Hester reported that all nine of her children had survived to that census. With her that year were Nelson, aged 24, Jessie (enumerated as E.L.J.), aged 19, Perl (Perle?), aged 14, Clide (Clyde?) C. aged 13, Nellie, aged 9 and Mona May, aged 15, and Mona's husband Russell Edward Hills, aged 25. Eldest son William had married Anna Mary Bonner in 1896 in Champaign IL. Eliza and an unknown sibling were also out on their own by then.

Nellie, aged 19, was still living at home with her mother in Mill, Grant, Indiana, when the 1910 Census was done. She had found work as a washer cutter in a rubber factory. Also with them was Hester's 5-year-old grandson George A. Hill, Mona and Edward's son. Still lodging with the family was 58-year-old Thomas McCarty, a carrier in a bottle factory. Hester reported that only eight of her nine children had survived to 1910.

I couldn't find Nellie in 1920. On 10 Sep 1923, she married William Geller. She lost her mother Hester four years later in 1927.

Nellie and husband William appeared together on the 1930 Census, living in Walnut, (Argos), Marshall Co., Indiana. William was a farmer. With the couple were their two sons, Robert T., aged 5, and David William, aged 2, almost 3. That enumeration took place on April 2, 1930. Nellie was seven months pregnant with their third son, Homer Dean, who arrived on May 30th.

Sadly, Nellie and William's son Robert died in 1935 at age nine or ten.

By the 1940 Census, Nellie, aged 39, and William, aged 53, had moved the family to Union, Fulton Co., Indiana, where he had been born in 1876. William, aged 63, was still farming. Their son David was 12, and Homer was 9. Also living in the home was 68-year-old lodger William Schinn.

Nellie died on 23 Nov 1951, one day before her 61st birthday. She was laid to rest next to son Robert. After Nellie's death, husband William lived for fifteen more years, first with son David in Akron, Ohio, and at the end with son Homer in Rochester, Fulton Co., Indiana, dying on 17 Jan 1966.
