James was born to Nannie (Chitty) and William Ebenezer Race in Fornfelt, Scott County, Missouri (a town that no longer exists - "Fornfelt was consolidated with Ancell since 1950 to form Scott City" - Rand, McNally Reference Guide of Mo., 1974.).

He married Louise Dorothy Kosmicki on May 25, 1940 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. They had two children - William and Anne. They moved to California in 1953.
