JOPLIN, Mo. — George Robert "Bob" Livingston, age 93, of Joplin, peacefully left his earthly home for his Heavenly home on Friday, Dec. 27, 2013.
He was born on Aug. 21, 1920, in Bellville, Mo., the son of the late Kirkpatrick "Jinks" and Mrytle (Holt) Livingston. He was the youngest of his siblings: Bud, Jim, Jinks, Charles, Estella and Betty, all deceased. He finished high school in San Diego, after which he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps for nine months. On March 7, 1940, he enlisted in the United States Navy. After boot camp, he was sent to the Naval Hospital in San Diego for training and duty as a Hospital Corpsman. Later, he also completed training in the Naval Dental Technician School and served in that capacity for much of his twenty year career in the Navy. During World War II, he did tours of duty on ships in the Aleutian Islands, Saipan and the South Pacific, and later, in Korea and Pearl Harbor. He retired from the Navy on Sept. 10, 1959, having earned many awards for his outstanding service.
As a young man, Bob became a Christian and maintained an active faith and service to the Lord throughout his entire life. He served as an Elder at both Central City Christian Church and at the Park Plaza Christian Church in Joplin, as well as various other leadership roles.
Upon his retirement, from the Navy, Bob was employed by First National Bank of Joplin, where he later retired as a Vice President. He was active in local banking for 30 years.
Following retirement, he became very active with a number of local non-profit agencies, among which are: St. John's Hospital, Hospice and Prestige; American Red Cross; Sertoma Club; Ozark Mental Health Association; Ozark Psychiatric Foundation; Arthritis Association and the Sunrise Optimist Club. He served as both president and treasurer of several of the above groups.
In June 1942, Bob married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Hildreth, who preceded him in death in 1981. Later, he married Dorothy VanHooser, who preceded him in death in 1989. He later married Janet Price, and she survives.
Also surviving is a daughter, Roberta Rutledge and her husband, Mark; along with two grandsons, Erick and Jacob; and one great-grandson, Grayson.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Mason-Woodard Chapel. B.A. Austin, Minister, will officiate. Burial will be in Osborne Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday evening.
Memorial contributions may be given to Park Plaza Christian Church Building Fund or the Arthritis Association in care of the mortuary.
