Saturday, December 17, 1910: David Conger Died Early This Morning: Past to the World Beyond After Many Months of Patient Suffering: After months of patient suffering, death came to the relief of David Conger at an early hour this morning, and the tired spirit went out to the life beyond. Mr. Conger was born at Mt. Clemens, Mich., in 1838. He came to Wisconsin with his parents in 1844 and located at Sheboygan Falls, where the most of his early life was spent. On the 8th of June, 1861, he inlisted in the 8th Wisconsin regiment, in which his father was captain. He was elected to the office of fourth sergeant, and retired in 1864 as second lieutenant. During his three years of active service he participated in many battles but escaped unscathed except for weakened health, as the result of exposure. Shortly after his return from the army he was united in marriage to Miss Fannie A. Raymond of Fond du Lac county. Three children blessed the union - Jessie, now Mrs. Walter A. Johnson of Madison; Louis, now in the employ of the C., M. & St. P. railroad at Milwaukee; and Fred, who died in childhood. The family came to Janesville in 1879, where they have since resided. Mr. Conger engaged in the real estate business and was active until failing health compelled him to retire. The spirit of patriotism which prompted him to go to the front of the call of his country characterized his life, and just before he lost consciousness, waving his hands above his head, he repeated that all tribute to the flag he loved so well: "The star spangled banner, Oh! long may it wave, O'er the land of the free And the homes of the brave." Mr. Conger combined with love of country, love for his fellow men. He was a man of genial disposition and sunny temperament, and his days were prolonged because of the hope and courage which inspired his heart. He will be missed from the ranks of old comrades, whose companionship he enjoyed so much, but more especially from the home to which he contributed so freely, the love and thoughtfulness which makes the home life ideal. Generous sympathy will be extended to the wife and children who mourn. The funeral will be held at the house, 545 Terrace street, at 2:30 Monday afternoon, and the remains will rest at Oak Hill. Rev. J. C. Hazen will conduct the services at the house and the G. A. R. at the grave.
