Son of John Newton and wife Catherine Davis, from Kingston, Ontario. Married Helen Hood Taylor in Woodbury Iowa in 1908. Parents of three daughters: Catherine Hudson (born 1910), Margaret Taylor (born 1912), and Charlotte Alexandra (born 1915). Sadly for the young family, wife Helen died in 1918 at age 41 of a heart ailment.
