Harvey Petersen, 82, longtime resident of Griswold, IA, died Saturday afternoon, November 1, 2008 at the Jennie Edmundson Memorial Hospital in Council Bluffs, IA.

Loren Harvey Petersen was born in Atlantic, IA, on May 29, 1926, the son of Chris H. and Gertrude Emily (Lile) Petersen. He grew up in Atlantic and graduated from Atlantic High School in 1943. He joined the U. S. Army Air Corps and served in WW II. When the Air Corps became the Air Force he served in the Korean War. He was an airplane mechanic. On December 14, 1951, he married Ruth Ann Dodge in Ralston, NE. They moved to Griswold and Harvey has resided here ever since. Harvey was first employed by Sidles in Atlantic and then worked for Andrew Murphy and Sons (a Chrysler MOPAR parts corporation). He later became parts director for the Avoca, Harlan and Atlantic Auto Marts. He then worked for Husker Dodge in Omaha until his eyesight failed in 1974.

Immediate survivors include his son Dr. Jerry D. Petersen and his wife Linda (Gammell) of Atlantic; his granddaughter, April Louise Petersen of Jersey City, NJ; and his grandson James Michael Petersen of Phoenix, AZ. Other survivors include his brother William of Alameda, CA; his sisters Nadine Hinkle of Warrensburg, MO, and Helen Zaloudek of Council Bluffs, IA; and one sister-in-law, Mary Hecht of Madison, WI, as well as many nieces and nephews including a grandnephew, Kyle Zaloudek of Council Bluffs and nephews, Robert (Sandy) Lansdown of Atlantic and Tom (Nancy) Tomkin of Madison, WI.

His parents, his wife Ruth Ann on June 25, 2002, his son James on August 15, 1965, his brother Milo, his sisters, Treva Lensch and Norma Young, and his brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Leroy Dodge, Bonnie Erwin, Dode Alston, and Lucille Conn preceded Harvey in death.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 5, 2008 at the Griswold United Methodist Church at 11:00 AM, Pastor Leila Blackburn officiating. Open visitation will be at the Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold and visitation with the family will be at the church on Wednesday prior to the funeral beginning at 9:30 AM. Burial will be in the Griswold Cemetery.
