Mary Louise Serafin (nee Turner), 85 of Whiting, IN passed away Sunday, December 22, 2013 at the St. Margaret Mercy Healthcare Center, Hammond.

She was the beloved wife of the late Richard H. Serafin who passed away January 2, 1992; loving mother of Ralph (Nancy) Serafin, Lou Ann (Dean) Eitel and Nancy (Jeffery) Stoll all of Whiting, Judy (Michael) Brown of Woodstock, IL, Margaret (Timothy) Hanchar of Highland, Jeffrey (Betsy) Serafin of Altamounte Springs, FL and Betty Jo (Anthony) Diaz of Hammond; cherished grandmother of eight, adoring great-grandma of five; proud great, great-grandma of one; dear sister-in-law of Margaret Turner; godson, John Chorba; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was also preceded in death by her grandson, Scott J. O'Brien; brother, Edson E. Turner; and sister, Betty B. Chorba.

Funeral services will be held Friday, December 27, 2013 at 10:00 AM at the Baran Funeral Home, 1235-119th St., Whiting with Pastor Peter Ward of the Whiting United Methodist Church, officiating.

Interment, Elmwood Cemetery, Hammond.

Visitation at the funeral home Thursday from 3:00-8:00 PM.

Mary Lou Serafin was born on July 2, 1928 in Lost Springs, WY to Elmer "Babe" and Gladys (Decker) Turner, making the town's population at the time – "9". She came to Roby, IN in 1932 and was "raised in a barn" at the Roby Riding Stable, her parents being the proprietors. Mary Lou was a proud graduate of George Rogers Clark High School, Class of 1946, the first class to attend all grades "K" through 12! She was a cherished member of the Whiting United Methodist Church, the Chat-or-Sew Club (to most, just "Club"), gathering for over 60 years, the Tuesday Morning Koffee Klatch Bowling League for close to 40 years and was a former board member of the Hammond Public Library. She cherished traveling the country with her family and friends and enjoyed collecting owls, camping, playing cards and spending holidays and vacations with loved ones. Mary Lou will always be remembered for her beautiful smile and her love for her family and friends.
