Mother: Catherine Leach Hancock
A Confederate soldier; husband of Mary [Mollie] E. Haile Hancock (1846-1924). Jefferson served with six brothers during the Civil War; one brother served with the Union forces (John Jasper Hancock). He served with the Confederacy with the Texas Sharpshooters, Company D, 1st Battalion, 9th Brigade, Lamar County. The Sharpshooters covered Louisiana and Mississippi. Jefferson's brother, Joseph M "Tobe" Hancock, was in the same company.
In 1874, Mr. Hancock bought 100 acres in Erath County; throughout the next twenty years, he continued to buy land. Mr. Hancock was a charter member of the Morgan Mill Masonic Lodge (now part of the Stephenville Lodge) and taught in Masonic schools in the North Central Texas area for many years.
