Jonas Olsson was christened in Alfta, Gävleborg län, Sweden on April 11, 1877. He was soldier number 93 in the Hälsingland regiment, and served at Göta canal 1812-1813, Norway 1813-1814 and 1816, Åkers canal 1822, Hjälmare canal 1824, most likely as a guard or in some other capacity. Prisoners did penal servitude at these canals.

Because some surnames, such as Olsson and Jonsson, were extremely common in Sweden at that time, the military assigned military surnames to recruits. The men receiving them had the right to either retain the names or discard them after their service. This is how Jonas Olsson became Jonas Olsson Ehn. Later, because they were the sons of a man name Jonas, his sons' surnames were known as "Jonsson" or "son of Jonas," unless or until they, too, joined the military and were given their own military surnames. Three of his sons had such names, and these were passed on to their own sons and daughters.

Jonas and his wife, Brita Jansdotter, were married on Feb 15, 1816, and lived in Åsen, Kyrkbyn, Alfta parish. They had seven children: Jona, Margreta, Brita, Olof, Johan, Pehr and Anders. Of these, at least three emigrated to America. They were:

Johan, known as Johan Jonsson Sjölin John Sholin

Pehr, known as Pehr Jonsson Nord, or Peter Nord

Anders, known as Anders Jonsson Printz, or Andrew Printz
