Elmer was born to Lee and Gertrude Stockwell Winfield in Salt Fork, OK on August 6, 1920. He died March 6, 2005 at the Golden Oaks Nursing Home. He was raised in Salt Fork and later attended the Enid school system. He had a brother Virgil who was killed in a hunting accident. He married Arlene Ingmire and they had two sons, Bob and Russell Wayne and a daughter, Ruth. After the death of his first wife, he later married Georgia Wirth. They had six children. In 1947 he started working for the Frisco Railroad as a switchman and retired in 1983 due to injuries on the job. He was a charter member of the Enid Polka Club.

He is survived by his children, Bob Winfield and wife Karen of Colorado Springs, CO, Ruth Friend of Enid, Dennis Winfield of Enid, Linda Estill of Enid, Janet Kale of Kingfisher, Treva Lewellen and husband Dee of Ben Wheeler, TX, Tom Winfield and his wife Ruth, Randy Winfield and his wife Kim all of Enid; his two sisters, Gladys Durham and Dean Eck; one brother, Floyd Winfield of Enid; 14 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, all who loved their grandpa very much.

He is preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Virgil; and his wives Arlene and Georgia and a son, Russell Wayne.
