Merritt John O'Brien, 71, died at his home, 45 Middle St., Florence, the morning of Feb. 10th after a long illness. He was born in Florence, son of the late Michael and Ellen (Maloney) O'Brien and had been a lifelong resident of that community. He conducted a barbershop on Maple St. there for many years. He was a member of the local council of the Knights of Columbus and the Holy Name Society of Annunciation Church. He also served as a trustee of the Florence Savings Bank. Surviving are his wife, Margaret (Coughlin) O'Brien; two daughters, Miss Rita M. and Mrs. John Meehan, and a son, Howard J. of the state police, stationed at the Pittsfield barracks.
