FARMINGTON -- Elwood A. Allen, 87, of Farmington died early Tuesday evening, Aug. 23, 2005, at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington.
He was born in Jay on July 9, 1918, a son of Arthur E. and Annie (Allen) Allen.
He graduated from Livermore Falls High School and later the University of Maine at Orono, where he majored in education.
He graduated from UMO in 1967 with his master's degree in guidance.
Mr. Allen taught school in Flagstaff, Rangeley, and Buckfield and served as superintendent of schools in Strong, Phillips and Kingfield, and had served as principal at Phillips High School and as a guidance counselor at Mount Abram High School.
On Aug. 23, 1942, he married Blanche Vaughan. Mr. Allen's children and grandchildren were his most important accomplishments.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Blanche of Farmington; a son, Vaughan, and his wife, Nancy, of Nashville, Tenn.; daughter, Luralee Knapp, and her husband, Maurice, of Farmington; daughter-in-law Marsha of Nashville; grandchildren, Christopher, Kimberly, Amanda, Andrew, Jennifer, Sarah and Benjamin.
He was predeceased by a son, Verne and a brother, Earland "Zeke."
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday from the Phillips United Methodist Church.
Relatives and friends are invited to call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Wiles Funeral Home, Cremation Service, and Remembrance Center, 137 Farmington Falls Road, Farmington. Interment will be at the Jay Hill Cemetery in Jay.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Phillips Public Library, 96 Main St., Phillips, ME 04966.
