After his father's death, the family relocated to Patricksburg and he graduated from Patricksburg High School. He won a corn shucking contest while in high school and was well-known for his skills. He was a farmer all his working years and he and his family started Schopmeyer Well Drilling, which continues on today. He married Mary Lou Hauser on March 31, 1949; they celebrated 51 years of marriage prior to her death.
Wayne had many talents and hobbies including "making something out of nothing," hunting, target shooting and restoring tractors, especially International Harvester, narrow fronts, vintage 1940s-1950s.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Lou; a stillborn daughter, Linda Susan; three brothers, Vernis, Lawrence and Paul; two sisters, Ellen Dalton and Edna Thompson; and one son, Michael Dale Schopmeyer.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Wayne Lynn Schopmeyer and wife, Nancy; daughter-in-law, Pamela Schopmeyer; grandchildren, Michelle Sevier (Todd), Brandy May (Randy), Tiffany White (James), Tracy McHenry (Ryan), Steven Schopmeyer (Renee), Sarah Martin, Amanda Baumgartner (Rusty), Deena Rubeck, Michael Wayne Schopmeyer, Brianna Strange (Daniel), Phillip Schopmeyer, Mikayla Schopmeyer; great-grandchildren, Tristan Sheese, Calob Sheese, Juan Sevier, Pablo Sevier, Lorena Sophia Sevier, India Jolly, Karis Jolly, Maddie Martin, Aubrey White, Evelynn Schopmeyer, Orrin Schopmeyer and Ryne Baumgartner; and several nieces and nephews and other extended family.
Services will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home with Pastor Lemont Bonath officiating. Visitation will be Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at the funeral home. Private family burial will take place at Poland Zion Cemetery.
