U.S. Congressman. He completed preparatory studies under a private tutor in Alabama and moved to Sulphur Springs, Texas, in 1880. There, he studied law, was admitted to the bar, commenced practice law and served as member of the Texas State Senate, (1888-96). In 1897, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-fifth Congress and served until his death at age 39.
