HAMNER, Russell Newcomb, 91, formerly of Charlottesville, Va., went to be with the Lord Sunday, December 15, 2013. He was the son of the late Charles Edward and Iris Newcomb Hamner. He was preceded in death by his son, Russell N. Hamner Jr.; and his wife, Barbara Hall Hamner. He is survived by two daughters, Anne Goodman and her husband, John, of Rockville and Pam Joseph and her husband, Burt, of Charlottesville; sister, Phyllis Steger of Charlottesville; four grandchildren, Michael Goodman and his wife, Nancy, Nicole Collier and her husband, Jonathan, Beth Travis and her husband, Sean, and Clayton Sims and his fiancee, Jamie; 10 great-grandchildren, Shaia Goodman, Toby, Colby, Tory and Corey Collier, Colton, Derek and Archer Travis, Kaelyn and Natalie Sims; numerous nieces and nephews. Russell was a Staff Sergeant that served in the European Theater during World War II with the 84th Division, Company L 334th Infantry. He received the Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, Distinguished Unit Badge, WWII Victory Ribbon, Bronze Star Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon. He also actively participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He was an accountant with Uniroyal in Scottsville, Va. and retired as an accountant with the United States Postal Service
