John H. Ellison Sr. was born on May 25, 1813, the son of Jonathan Ellison and Rachel Newman.

His first marriage was to Rebecca Jane Leath on May 18, 1833 in Dandridge, Jefferson County, Tennessee. Together, they had the following children:
