John G Smith The subject of this notice was born in Friend's Cove February 1825, and departed this life March 13, at his home in Napier township, at the age of 80 years, one month and nine days. Decedent had a robust constitution. About nineteen years ago a cancer developed on his lower lip and was successfully removed by Dr. W. P. Whitmore. Three years ago, another one started on his right thumb and although he had the thumb amputated it spread all through his system and was the immediate cause of his death,
Decedent found a companion in Catharine Diehl whom he married early in life. To them were born four children Louisa, wife of James Crawford; and Sophia, wife of Henry Smith, of Hellsville; Romanus, deceased; and Philip Smith, of Cumberland. His wife was an invalid for 2S years and departed this life May 24, 1895.
Mr. Smith was always very active. He was a cheerful disposition and jovial. while some men, with his troubles would have become chronic grumbles, Mr. Smith went about his work whistling and ever cheerful. It was always a pleasure for him to entertain his friends at his home. For the last six months of his iife he had his home with his daughter, Mrs. Crawford and suffered excruciating pain until death came and received him. He was a member of the Reformed church at Shellsburg on Wednesday morning and was conducted by his pastor, Rev. Daniel G. Hetrick. Mr. Smith was well known and was held in high esteem by those who knew him.
