Johnnie Irene Johnson-Hayes passed from this life Friday, December 13, 2013 in Lubbock, TX. She was born into this life Tuesday, January 4, 1944 to Jimmie B. and Mildred Estelle (Bass) Hayes in Abilene, TX. Johnnie she learned how to work hard young in life, often joining her father in his construction business. She parlayed that work ethic into varied endeavors including a directorship of environmental services at Aspen Valley Hospital and an owner-operatorship at High Mountain Taxi. Although a Texan at heart, her beloved Aspen was truly her home. Our mother was a protective lioness when it came to her family and viewed her loved ones through rose colored glasses. A fun loving, free spirited person who gave wholeheartedly, worked hard, played hard, and loved fiercely.
Johnnie was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters Melba Rae Hayes and Nola Mae McCurrin. She is survived by two daughters, Dede Holman and husband Butch, and Dr. Cynthia Holman; grandchildren, Jessica Holman, Rachael Holman-Knipstein and husband Ben, Steven Rutherford Vance; a brother Charles B. Hayes; and sisters, Viloa Hayes and Donna Hayes-Durant and husband Verlin; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service, to commemorate Johnnie's 69 years of life, is scheduled for 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, December 18, 2013, at Turning Point Community Church, Lubbock. The family will greet friends from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M., Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at Agape Funeral Chapel, Lubbock.
