"Rev. James A. Howe, D.D., (Hillsdale College, 1876) brother of Rev. Geo. W. Howe, was raised near Centralville, by pious parents, serving in the Lowell chuirch for over forty-two years as most useful membes.. Their home was known for its Christian hospitality.
James A. was converted under the labors of Rev. O.T. Moulton, and soon after united with the church. He studied a term at Smithville Seminary and another at North Hampton, NH. He prepared for college with his elder brother under the able teacher, and in 1856 entered the sophomore class of Bowdoin College, graduating in 1859.
He studied in the Biblical School at New Hampton, and at Andover Seminary, and accepted the church at Blackstone, Mass., where he was ordained by the Rhode Island Association.
The next year he married Miss Rachel E. Rogers of Upper Stillwater, ME.
After a pastorate of eighteen months he was pastor for over eight years at Olneyville, R.I. Here he added 104 to the church, sixty-two of them by baptism. He resigned in 1872, to accept a chair of theology in the theological department of Bates College.
Two years later his wife, Rachel, died at Providence R.I., and was buried at Pocasset Cemetery, near Olneyville.
She left a son and a daughter.
In 1877, he married Miss Julia R. Woodman, of Portland, Me."
