Mrs. Joseph Macht, nee Margaret Elizabeth Bellinder, was born Nov. 15, 1870, at Kahles, Russia, and came with her husband and seven children to Kans. in 1903 to establish a home.

With prudence and economy they saved enough to purchase a farm, and not with standing unfavorable farming conditions they persevered and succeeded. Mrs. Macht was a kind-hearted woman and a loving mother, having always the welfare of her children at heart.

She is survived by her husband and six children, one daughter, Mrs. Azer (sic, Artzer) of Topeka, passing away several yrs. (sic, months) ago.

The surviving children are George, Mrs. Wm. Cordts, Peter, Katherine, Lena and Joseph.

Mrs. Macht passed away Monday, Feb. 7, 1921, after a lingering illness, the result of influenza contracted two years ago.

Funeral services were held at St. Bernard's Church Thursday morning, Feb. 10, conducted by Rev. Fr. Hundt. Burial was in the Wamego Catholic Cemetery. The family has the sympathy of the community.

Note: Elizabeth was the oldest child. She spent most of her time in the Blacksmith Shop with her dad. Lena (age 9) and her Mom were sitting on the steps while her Mom was reading a letter telling her about the death of her father (Adam Bellinder). This was about 1914.

Grandma Elizabeth (Bellinder) Macht:
by Cecelia Tibbetts.

Grandma Macht came to America on the boat with her family. Of her, I can't remember too much. We lived in Wamego and she came to stay with us when she was ill, especially when the roads were bad when it was muddy or cold. It was difficult to travel the 7 miles from their farm to Wamego since the only means of travel was by horse and buggy. Also she was close to her Doctor (Dr. Ben Brianner).

She sat in a rocking chair with her feet on a padded foot stool, my father made because her legs and feet were so swollen. They called it "sugar dropsy" then; it was diabetes. I can remember going out to the farm with my mother when she was so ill.

Grandma and Great Grandma dressed the way the large picture shows for everyday - full gathered skirts & tops usually grey or colored with a little design in them, and an apron. The family photos shows the way they dressed for church on Sunday or special occasions. They had scarves for their heads & shawls to wear.

She died when she was 52 years old and is buried in the Catholic Cemetery at Wamego, KS. Tombstone date 1869 -1923 is wrong.
