Civil War, Ohio Infantry Regiment: 142 Company: E

Occupation: Judge

A frightful accident occurred in the southwest corner of Perry Township about 10 o'clock Tuesday of this week. The boiler of the sawmill owned by James Holmes & Bros. exploded and killed two men instantly-Samuel J. Buckmaster and Henry Ridenbaugh. Buckmaster was horribly mutilated: one leg torn off at the hip, the abdomen torn open and the entrails exposed to view and his clothing stripped off. Young Ridenbaugh was blown a considerable distance, his head striking a tree, whereby his skull was horribly crushed. There were four other men at the mill at the time of the explosion: Isaac Rine, a gentlemen named Oxley, one of the Holmes and a fireman whose name your correspondent could not learn. Mr. Holmes was filling the saw when the explosion occurred. These gentlemen escaped serious injury although they were badly shocked and may be disabled for a few days. Their escape from instantaneous death is almost miraculous. Ridenbaugh and Buckmaster were married. The boiler bursted from the fire box back. The sad accident has cast a gloom over the entire community and will furnish food for days to come. Much sympathy is expressed for the bereaved friends.
