Agnes Marie Clasgens Hanson, age 73, passed away peacefully on December 14, 2013, at her residence in Memphis, surrounded by her adoring family. Lovingly known as "Mimi", Agnes was born July 15, 1940, the fourth child of the late Ed and Carolyn Clasgens. She grew up in the "suburbs" of Memphis (now referred to as "Midtown"), and was a fixture at Overton Park, where she won numerous awards for playground talent and safety. She was a 1958 graduate of Sacred Heart High School. On December 28, 1959, she married Paul M. Hanson, and began her long and glorious career as a wife, mother and community volunteer. Over the years, Mimi gave of her time and talents to many worthwhile organizations. For many years, she served as a Pink Lady for the Methodist Hospital System. She was also a longtime volunteer for Birthright of Memphis. For the past twelve years, she has served as a volunteer for Baptist Trinity Hospice, where her loving touch has endeared her to countless patients and their grateful families. A devout Catholic, Mimi also spent several hours each day devoted to prayer at her kitchen table. If you ever met Mimi, you were included in her daily prayers. With such a strong belief in the power of prayer, Mimi once joked that she would like to join the cloistered nuns at the Monestary of St. Clare -- if only they allowed smoking, drinking and gambling! Mimi was renowned for the lavish, all-girl birthday parties that she threw for herself. The only men allowed were her two sons and Gene Finney the harmonica player. Her husband was not even invited! Mimi was also known to make the occasional trip to Tunica. For her, the best part about winning was sharing the bounty with those she loved, and the worst part about losing was having nothing to share. Never addicted to gambling, she was hopelessly addicted to giving. Over the years, Agnes and Paul traveled to many wonderful places, with London and the Island of Barbados ranking as Mimi's favorites. But the happiest trips of all were those made just three hours away to the family's vacation home on Greer's Ferry Lake, in the company of her family and dearest friends. Never a big fan of the water, Mimi rarely got on a boat. But she tended to the house, said her prayers (even at the lake) and made sure that a wonderful dinner was always awaiting those of us who were sunburned and tipsy at the end of the day. And she could often be seen tooling around in the only golf cart at Eden Isle decorated with ladybugs and spinners! Taking a cue from the Queen of England, Mimi's signature Ladybug Flag was flown over the home only when she was "in residence". Sadly, the flag and the precious memories have now been lovingly tucked away. Agnes was preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Carolyn Clasgens; two brothers, Eddie Clasgens and Bradley Clasgens; and one nephew, Edward Clasgens, III. She leaves her loving husband of 54 years, Paul M. Hanson of Memphis (the former president and CEO of Hanson Graphics, Inc.); two sons, Mike Hanson and his wife Michelle of Germantown, TN and Paul Hanson, Jr. of Eudora, MS; one daughter, Loralee Hanson of Memphis; four grandchildren, Erica Hanson Jonakin and her husband Dusty of Memphis, Evan Hanson of Memphis and Hannah and Hailey Hanson of Eudora; and two great-grandchildren, Maddox and Annabelle Jonakin of Memphis. She also leaves two sisters, Sr. Carol Clasgens, SCN, of Nazareth.KY, and Sheila Dietz and her husband Buddy of Memphis; and three sisters-in-law, Joyce Clasgens Doyle of Stuart, FL, Valerie Clasgens of Germantown (who has lovingly kept the family well-fed with delicious homemade cookies and cakes during this difficult time), and Helen "Nickie" Mack of Memphis. She also leaves several nieces and nephews, and too many dear friends to mention, all of whom loved her dearly and whom she loved dearly in return. The family would also like to acknowledge the loving care offered and provided by Mishelle Mitchell and Dana Devoe of Baptist Trinity Hospice. Visitation for Mimi will be 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, December 17 at Canale Funeral Directors, concluding with a Rosary at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 18 at St Louis Catholic Church. A joyful celebration of her precious life (including the harmonica talents of Gene Finney!) will take place immediately following Mass in the church reception hall, after which Mimi will be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery. The family requests that any memorials be directed, per Mimi's wishes, to the Church Health Center, The Memphis chapter of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, Baptist Trinity Hospice, St. Albert's Catholic Church of Heber Springs, AR,or charity of your choice.
