Alonzo was the son of Pietro Damele (name later changed to Ameli) and Mary Platt. Pietro was a confectioner and had emigrated from Italy. Alonzo served in Co G, New York 5th Infantry during the Civil War. He was wounded during the march to the Second Battle of Manasas, and was hospitalized in Baltimore, Maryland. He was married on 19 May 1864 to Jessie Isabelle Robinson.

Alonzo and Isabelle operated the Brooklyn Hotel in Ocean Grove for a number of years. They lived at 1422 Pacific Street in Brooklyn, and this was the address for both when they died.
