The first of seven children born to William R & Sarah Ellen (Crim) Wilkes of Shelby Co IN, later of Rush Co IN, Marshall was named for his paternal Uncle, Capt Theodore Marshall Wilkes.

Marshall married Anna "Annie" Frances Hester in 1887 in Rush Co IN, the daughter of William D & Eliza Jane Hester of Rush Co IN.

Children with Annie:
1) Josie Mae Wilkes (1888-1966), m: Orville Benifiel.
2) Willard A Wilkes (1891-1915), never married.
3) Charles Leonidas Wilkes (1893-1987), m: Margaret Estee Pyatt.
4) Virgil R Wilkes (1896-1977), m: Myrtle Fern Carmony.
5) Hazel M Wilkes (1898-1956), m: Charles Earl Carmony.
6) Robert Wilkes (1900-bef 1910)
7) Mabel Frances Wilkes (b: 1903), m: James Gulley.
8) Floyd G Wilkes (1904-1989), m: Miss Juanita F____.

After the death of his mother, Marshall cared for his widowed father. A farmer in his younger years, by 1920 Marshall was a carpenter. In 1930 at age 61 yrs, he was the proprietor of a garage.

The Rushville Republican, 29 Mar 1932, Tuesday, Pgs 1 & 2:
"GARAGE OWNER OF MANILLA IS DEAD
Theodore M. Wilkes, 63, Found Dead in Garage Office by His Son.
HEART ATTACK GIVEN AS CAUSE OF DEATH
Victim of a heart attack, Theodore M. Wilkes, aged 63, a well known resident of Manilla, was found dead in the office of a garage he operated there by his son Floyd about ten o'clock Monday night.
Coroner Lowell M. Green, was summoned, pronounced heart disease brought on by a sudden attack as the cause of death. He has been in failing health for some time and had complained to Arthur Edwards about 7:30 o'clock that his heart had been troubling him.
Mr. Wilkes had been a life-long resident of Manilla, being born there December 10, 1868. Prior to operating a garage, he was engaged in farming near Manilla.
Among the survivors are the widow, three sons, Floyd at home, Virgil of Manilla and Lon of Indianapolis, two daughters, Mrs. Charles Carmony of Modoc, and Mrs. May Benefield of Manilla, one brother, Lewis Wilkes of Manilla, and two sisters, Mrs. Katie Craig of Manilla and Mrs. Adda Piercie [sic] of Hamilton, Ohio. Eleven grandchildren and one great-grandchild also are among the survivors.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 o'clock Thursday morning at the Manilla Christian church with the Rev. M. E. Able of Indianapolis, formerly pastor of the Manilla M. E. church, in charge. Interment will be made in the Manilla cemetery."

Marshall is my maternal Gr-Grand Uncle.
