Born on July 18, 1917, in Mosinea, Wisconsin, a daughter of Michael and Frances Cebula Augustyn, she received her early education in Tug Hill elementary schools and was graduated from Lowville Academy in 1936, and from Newcomb Beautician School in Watertown in 1938. She also was a graduate of the Lewis County School of Practical Nursing from where she earned her LPN degree in 1967.
She married Edward J. Kovacs on June 10, 1939 at St. Peter's Church in New Bremen. Mr. Kovacs died on December 23, 2002.
Besides her loving role as the wonderful mother and homemaker that she was, Mrs. Kovacs owned and operated Clara's Beauty Shop in Croghan for a short time during the 1930's. After acquiring her nursing degree in 1967, she worked as an LPN at Lewis County General Hospital in Lowville until her retirement in 1980.
She was a communicant of St. Stephen's Catholic Church, Croghan, and was also a longtime member of its Rosary Society and Daughters of Isabella. She was a former member of the Beaver River Senior Citizens.
Surviving are two sons and a daughter-in-law, Christopher E. Kovacs, and long-time companion, Patti Tift, of Liverpool, NY, and John M. and Bonnie Kovacs, of Castorland, and two daughters and a son-in-law, Judith E. Pridell, of Saucier, MS, and Catherine F. and Stewart Best, of Croghan; three grandsons, Vincent Pridell, Christian Wright, and Michael Kovacs, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her loving husband, Edward, of 63 years, she was predeceased by four brothers, Michael, Leonard, John and Bernard Augustyn, and five sisters, Evelyn Augustyn, Mary Podolski, Josephine Cody, Martha Lewandowski and Wanda Rohr.
Clara's most enjoyable pastimes were gardening, crocheting, ceramics, and especially oil painting, for which she was so determined to become proficient at, that she used to attend night school painting classes in Beaver Falls.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 11, 2016, beginning with a 9:30 a.m. Prayer Service at Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan, followed by a 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial from St. Peter's Church, Lowville, with the Rev. Leo A. Wiley, retired Pastor of St. Stephen's Church, Croghan, officiating. Spring burial will be St. Peter's Cemetery, New Bremen.
Calling hours will be on Sunday, January 10th, from 2-4 and 6-8 at the funeral home.
