Dorothy Helen Alexander, 98, St. Louis, died Monday, January 28, 2013, at the St. Louis Altenheim.

She was born on December 20, 1914 in Macon County, MO, the daughter of Sam and Velma Alexander.

Survivors include a sister-in-law Dorothy V. Alexander, Shelbyville; niece Mary Jane (Mike) Goble, Mustang, OK; nephew D. M. (Marsha) Alexander, Lee's Summit; niece Sue Ann (Lon) Morrow, Mt. Pleasant, IA; niece Judy (Pad) Rao, Fredericksburg, VA; 15 great nieces and great nephews; 25 great-great nieces and great-great nephews; cousin Kathleen Conway, Shelbina and numerous other cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Dorian and Donald; a sister-in-law Lorraine Alexander and a niece Bobby Cornwell.

Ms. Alexander grew up in Shelby County. Following high school graduation, she taught school, attended Chillicothe Business College and Culver Stockton College and worked in secretarial positions in Jefferson City and St. Louis. In 1942, she accepted a position as secretary at the St. Louis Ordinance District Gage Laboratory and worked there for several years. During World War II, she received an appointment by the U.S. Navy Civil Service and worked for the Navy Air Core near Pearl Harbor from 1945 through 1947. Following World War II, she returned to St. Louis and worked for the Bi-State Transit Company, formerly named the St. Louis Public Service Company. She served as secretary to the president of the company and retired from Bi-State in 1980, following 30 years of service. She continued to serve for many years as a realtor in St. Louis, where she specialized in residential properties. She was a very active and long term member of Union Avenue Christian Church in St. Louis, serving in various leadership roles. She represented her church at several World Conventions of Christian Churches including one in the 1970's in Australia. She enjoyed many regional, national, and international trips with dear friends and family members.

Visitation is planned for Friday, February 1, at 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Greening-Eagan-Hayes Funeral Home in Shelbyville. A graveside service will follow the visitation at the Shelby Memorial Cemetery.
