He married Bess Chastain on June 30, 1928 and they lived in Glendale, CA while he completed his degree from the University of California at Los Angeles. He was a teacher, principal and administrator for the California School Systems for thirty nine years, starting his teaching career in 1931 at the high school in Mendocino, CA where in 1943, he became principal. Wendell was also high school principal in the following California towns, Los Molinos 1945-47, Greenville 1947-50, and Galt 1950-63. In 1954 he became a professor at the Contra Costa Jr. College where he remained until his retirement in 1970.
Wendell and Bess moved to Grants Pass, OR, where they made their home until Bess's death in 1985. He then moved to Concord, CA, where he resided close to his children until his death. He is survived by four children. Ruth (Frank) Scott, Barbara (Don) Galloway, both of Concord, Philip Forney, Paradise, CA and Stephen Forney of St. Louis, MO. A sister, Mary Thompson of San Rose, CA; nine grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
He will be interred beside his wife of fifty-seven years in a private family service at Hawthorne Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Grants Pass, OR.
