During the Civil War, Dr. Radzinsky served as a white commissioned officer in the famous 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry of the Union Army, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was about 28 years old and working as a physician when he enlisted as a First Lieutenant and Assistant Surgeon on 8 August 1864. He was promoted to Surgeon of the 104th United States Colored Troops (USCT) and transferred to his new rank and regiment on 14 June 1865.
