U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Bethany College, in 1856, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1857 and commenced to practice law in Jefferson City, Missouri. He was appointed U.S. District Attorney for the western district of Missouri, by President Buchanan and served until his resignation in 1861. During the Civil War, he served as a Major in the Missouri State Guard, returned to Missouri when the command disbanded and served as Captain of ordnance in the Confederate Army. After the war, he resumed the practice of law and was a member of the Missouri State constitutional convention in 1875. In 1879, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-sixth Congress and served until his death.
