Altavista…..Raleigh Van Hedrick, age 89 of Altavista died Thursday, December 5, 2013 at his residence. Born October 31, 1924 in Pittsylvania County he was a son of the late Raleigh White Hedrick and Pearl May Atkins Hedrick. He was predeceased by his wife of 64 and a half years, Catherine Compton Hedrick; two brothers, J.K. Hedrick and Clark Hedrick; and four sisters, Grace Bousman, Nadine Yeatts, Betty Howell, and Hazel Edwards. Mr. Hedrick was a self-employed automobile mechanic. He enjoyed operating heavy equipment, yard work, gardening; and camping and cooking over a camp fire. He is survived by one son, Wayne Hedrick and his wife, Lyn of Evington; three daughters, Jane Dotson and her husband, Phillip of Evington, Cindy Bolling Stone and her husband, John of Evington and Reidsville, NC, and Gloria Joan Mattox and her husband, Paul of Lynch Station; two sisters, Joyce Crawley and her husband, Pete of Gretna, and Phyllis Derby and her husband, David of Clay, NY; nine grandchildren, Sherry Bing (Jay), Bruce Hedrick (Freda), Wendy Prewette (Mark), Rodney Dotson (Sherrie), Stacey Tribbett (Richard), Jeff Bolling (Laura), Jennifer Mattox, Christy Worley (Jesse), and Katie Kirby (Josh); 27 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be conducted 2:00 P.M. Monday, December 9, 2013 at Green Hill Cemetery by Rev. Brady Willis. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4:00 P.M. Saturday, December 7, 2013 at the residence of his daughter and son-in-law, Gloria Joan and Paul Mattox, 3950 Bedford Highway, Lynch Station, VA.
