Enlisted as a Private on December 24, 1861 in Company G, 13th Infantry Regiment Wisconsin. Absent [sick] Company G, 13th Infantry Regiment Wisconsin on November 24, 1865.

Thomas Brace was born on October 10, 1823 in Chemung County New York to Thomas Brace a veteran of the War of 1812 and Lovina Cook. He was married in 1839 at Fairport, Chemung, New York to Mytta Ann Hawkins daughter of Calvin Hawkins also a veteran of the War of 1812 and Anna Gannon. They had 6 children: Lovina b. July 4, 1844 in New York; Calvin and Nathan both born February 15, 1848 in Aroura, Kane, IL; Edward b. October 2, 1850 in Avon, Rock, WI; Anna b. October of 1852 in Avon, Rock, WI; and Trial b. December 25, 1854 in Avon, WI. Thomas and family appeared on the June 1, 1850 census at Naperville, Du Page, IL. December 24, 1861 Thomas enlisted at Janesville, WI as a Private in Company G of the 13th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry for a 3 year term of service. From March to August of 1862 he reported sick at Lawrence, KS. He was back on the muster roll in September and stayed on the roll until June 30, 1863 at Ft. Donelson, TN when he again reported as sick to the hospital. He stayed there until August 27, 1863 and then reported back for duty. On January 22, 1864 he was discharged from service at Nashville, TN but re enlisted the next day. In March of 1865 he was hospitalized again at Huntsville, AL
until discharge on December 26, 1865. The mother of Thomas died on April 4, 1879 at Wayne, Steuben, New York and the father on August 28, 1879 at the same place. He was paid a total of $400 in pension for his military service. Very early in 1869 Thomas and Mytta Ann went through an amicable divorce. They were remarried on November 14, 1889 by Rev. B. L. Prescott of the Baptist Church in Brodhead, Wisconsin. David and Anna (Brace) Shields were witnesses to this marriage. With the exception of his military service Thomas was always a farmer. He was described as being 5' 9" tall, having blonde hair, fair complexion and hazel eyes. Mytta Ann Brace died on Tuesday evening, April 21, 1896 after a long and painfull illness. She is buried in an unmarked grave in the Avon Cemetery on Avon Store Road next to her husband. Thomas died on Friday May 12, 1911 at his home in Brodhead. Note: On two occaisions Thomas gave his date of birth as being in June of 1819 but this is not likely considering other records. [ This was written by Gary L. Edgar and he asked it be added here]
