Eli Ayres, the son of Sarah Lippincott & Thomas Ayres of London, Middlesex, England, emigrated to Bastard Township, Leeds, Ontario, Canada in about 1832. There he married Ruth Stevens, daughter of neighbors Ruth Huntley Stevens & Abel Stevens on April 9, 1834. The couple emigrated to Illinois in 1839.

From Illinois they relocated, about 1842, to Appanoose County Iowa, near several members of the Stevens family. Ayres farmed in Iowa until his early death in about 1849. His oldest son, WE Ayres' bio says his father was also a physician and a Baptist minister.

The first sermon preached in the Caldwell, Appanoose, Iowa vicinity was at the house of Eli Ayres, by Reverend Isaac Newland in 1844.

Eli L. Ayres named Isaac Newland executor of his will in a codicil dated February 12, 1849. Ruth Ayres was the executor of the will dated January 25, 1849.

Following her husband's death, Ruth Anna Stevens Ayres married Sampson Shaw in 1852. Together with their young son Abel Shaw, her sons William Eli Ayres, James Albert Ayres, Palmer Hamilton Ayres and daughter Sarah Roseline Ayres Kerby and family, they crossed the plains to Oregon in about 1864.
