She attended West Bend Country School through the eighth grade, and then finished her education at Rock Port High School graduating in 1917. On August 26, 1934 she was united in marriage to Ivan Bay, in the parlor of the Salfrank home, in Rock Port, Missouri. This union was blessed with three children; June, Kathryn and John.
During the 1960’s she helped care for her nephew, Jerry Salfrank while his widowed mother taught school. For ten years he was loved and cared for as a close member of the family. During this time, Dorothy also cared for her ill sister, Lina. Besides being a good wife, mother and homemaker, she was also a devoted caregiver. In December of 2005, Dorothy became a resident of Elm Heights Care Center.
Dorothy was baptized and confirmed in the First Lutheran Church in Rock Port. In 1955, the family moved to Shenandoah and she transferred her membership to Emmanuel Lutheran Church. She was a member of WELCA, the evening circle and she was a very devoted member of the church. She enjoyed working in her flower garden and took great pride in her beautiful rose bed and lawn. Dorothy also loved children and animals.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sisters and seven brothers.
Survivors include her children, June Racine and her husband Deane of Shenandoah, Kathryn Swig of Omaha, Nebraska, John Bay of Decorah, Iowa; five grandchildren, Christopher Bay of Denver, Colorado, Melinda Bay of Parker, Colorado, Brian Bay of Iowa City, Iowa, Erik Bay of Decorah, Iowa, Rebecca Thorsen and her husband Erik of Long Beach, California. She also enjoyed a relationship with Renee Bay of Decorah, Iowa.
