. Minnie Knapp, Longest Active Druggist, Dies
. YARMOUTH - Minnie E. C. Knapp, 76, this community's municipal matriarch, died Monday in a Portland hospital following a brief illness.
. She had served residents here as a notary public, a justice of the peace, deputy sheriff, municipal health officer, town constable, police matron, appraiser, school board member and town council member, a post she held for nine years at the time of her death.
. In her private life Mrs. Knapp worked as a licensed detective, insurance agent and as a registered pharmacist for the past 55 years. She was considered to be the longest practicing woman druggist in the nation, and was named from 490 Maine druggists, to receive the Bowl of Hygeia an award for outstanding community service by A. H. Robbins, the pharmaceutical firm. She was also named to Who's Who in America.
. Mrs. Knapp was born in Jonesport on Sept. 8, 1897, the daughter of George and Evelyn Carver, and attended schools there.
. Earlier this year she was honored by the town's award in naming her "Most Distinguished Citizen for 1974." She had been Yarmouth's first woman town councilor and had resided here since 1921.
. She also served three terms as a representative in the Maine Legislature, in 1957, 1959 and 1961.
. Although Mrs. Knapp retired in 1966 after 10 years as the pharmacist at Pownal's Pineland Hospital and Training Center, she went on to work as a druggist at the Freeport Pharmacy, a post she held at the time of her death. Earlier she held similar positions here and in Cumberland.
. While a legislator, she served on the public health and institutions committees. She also served on numerous municipal committees.
. Mrs. Knapp was a past chief matron of Pythian Sisters here, a past matron of the Winnegance Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, and a past president of the chapter's past matrons. She was a longtime member of the Yarmouth Historical Society, an honorary member of the Maine Pharmaceutical Association, a member of the Yarmouth Village Improvement Society and the Yarmouth Women's Club and the Marble- head Chapter of Cruising Club of America.
. At an early age she held a coastal pilot's license.
. Her husband, Archie F. Knapp, died in 1957.
. Survivors include a son, Archie F. Knapp Jr., of York Harbor; three daughters, Mrs. Harold (Evelyn) Alward of Portland, Mrs. Robert (Gertrude) Drinkwater of Kittery Point and Mrs. Lawrence (Electa) Morris of Yarmouth, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
. The funeral service is to be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Lind- quist Funeral Home, 37 Portland St. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery here.
