Martha J. Buffington was the daughter of Isaac Buffington and Sarah Ann Fisher.

Her family moved from Illinois to Sherman township, Story County, Iowa, sometime between 1870 and 1880.

She married Eber Richard Castle (son of John Castle and Betsey Rochan) on December 25, 1887, at Story County, Iowa. To this union the following children were born.
1) Dessie O. Castle (Mrs. Carl Arnesen)(Aug 1889-)
2) Erma Alena Castle (Mrs. Ben Holland) (Jan 1891-4 Nov 1938)
3) Richard Eber Castle (24 Jan 1894-8 Feb 1990)
4) Etla John Juel "Jude" "Jewel E." Castle (30 Sep 1895-24 Oct 1974)
5) Eva Pearl Castle (1897-1898)

Martha married Walter L. Thomas (son of Lewis Washington Thomas and Caroline Roberts) on April 2, 1901, at Marshall county, Iowa. Walter was later adjudged insane, suffering from violent outbursts due to a head injury. He was sent to the asylum at Clarinda where he died.
